Aeneas Wilder: exhibitions One day everywhere will look like this back«

Untitled # 99

Mixed media, dimensions variable, 2003

This work was created from salvaged wood taken from a building in Kyoto. The former police barracks in the shin-shirakawa area of Kyoto were scheduled to be demolished during my residency period and so I was able to use this material, temporarily, on its journey to the recycling factory. You can see near the top of the installation, the wooden runners for shoji - Japanese sliding doors. Many old buildings are being torn down across Japan, and Kyoto is no exception. Only the temples and shrines remain. Observing the changing face of the city every day, inspired me to develop an exhibition around this theme.
