The Ministry of Truth, Bemis Centre for Contemporary Art, Omaha, USA.
Mixed media, dimensions variable, 2002 - 2008
The Ministry of Truth was developed during a residency period at the Bemis Centre for Contemporary Art which coincided with the run up to the Iraq War (2003 - 2011).
The work title was taken from one of the four ministries in the book 1984 by George Orwell.
The structure of the installation consists of wooden boxes, originally used as a filing system for an eye glass company working for the US military. The boxes were stacked to create a room with two doorways into the space. The interior was used to file news articles taken from a wide range of reputable journals on the internet, over the two month period of the residency. The intention was to create an archive of objective truths at a time when many media outlets and governments were freely promoting untruths. |
