iimawashi: Contemporary Art from Japan
Merz Gallery
Edinburgh International Festival Fringe 2005
Artists Name: Motoko Ohinata Title: La tour Material:DVD Duration 3mins 14 secs 2003
Motoko Ohinata has a dark view of her existence and uses her performance characters to escape her Japanese identity. Originally from Hokkaido, she believes that her life in Japan is restricted by the confines that Japanese society puts on a middle aged Japanese woman. Her performances are inspired by the ordinary materials and environment around her, which by becoming the object of her focus, allow her to express the true feelings that she has within her, in a manner that is both bizarre and occult. The work presented in the exhibition can be seen as a portrait of her subconscious life in Tokyo.
